House Arryn used to hold the former Kingdom of the Mountain and Vale until the Conquest, where it was surrendered to Visenya Targaryen atop the dragon Vaghar without a fight. The head of House Arryn traditionally holds the title of Defender of the Vale and Warden of the East. The Arryns are the first and foremost Andal Great House in Westeros. Their most recent lord, Jon Arryn, was foster-father to two young boys of other families - Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon.

The lords of the Vale — at least those not pursuing Lady Lysa’s hand — are restive under her rule. Bronze Yohn Royce, the greatest of the Arryn bannermen, is outspoken in his desire to join the war against the Lannisters. One source of dismay is Lady Lysa’s refusal to lend her uncle, Ser Brynden Tully, even a single sword to bring to Riverrun’s aid. Consequently, the Blackfish gives up his office as the Knight of the Gate and departs the Vale with his niece, Lady Catelyn Stark, to join Robb Stark’s host. Since Jon Arryn’s death, his wife Lysa rules in her son’s name as Lady of the Eyrie. She withdraws from the outside world in an attempt to protect her son and stays apart from the conflict that troubles the realm.

Jon Arryn and Lysa Tully's son is called 'Robert' not 'Robin' in the books. This change was made to prevent confusion with Robert Baratheon or Robb Stark. George R.R. Martin approved this change, noting that Robert Arryn's nickname in the books, 'Sweetrobin', remains intact. During the summer they rule over the Vale from the Eyrie, but during the winter they descend to the Gates of the Moon, a castle at the foot of the mountain.

Their seat is the Eyrie, a castle on a shoulder of the Giant's Lance, from where they rule over their domain, the Vale of Arryn. During the Great War, House Arryn forces participate in the Battle of Winterfell and suffer large casualties (half the forces that the Vale sent to Winterfell are obliterated). Despite their losses, they later participate in the Battle of King's Landing, supporting Daenerys Targaryen.

The Hand of the King preceding Eddard, who was a father figure to him and Robert during their fostering in the Vale and served as The Good Chancellor to Robert. His assassination at the beginning of the book sparks a chain of events that eventually lead to the start of the civil war. They alternate between the castles of the Eyrie (during spring and summer) and the Gates of the Moon (after the snow starts falling). Their sigil is a sky-blue falcon soaring against a white moon on sky-blue. Their words are "As High as Honor." The line dates back to the old Andal nation that invaded Westeros.

In their idyllic domain, the Arryns have often found themselves isolated from the greater events of the realm. This ended nearly fifteen years ago, though, as Lord Jon Arryn’s devotion to his former wards, Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon, drew House Arryn directly into the events that ended the Mad King’s reign. With Jon Arryn’s recent and sudden death, rule over the Vale falls to his widow and their sickly son, Robert, the last of the Arryn line.
House Arryn went on to pledge it's forces to House Stark, before briefly seceding from the Seven Kingdoms as part of the Third Kingdom of the North. The armies of the Vale are a match in size for those of the North or Dorne. They are an untapped source of military strength in the chaos following King Robert’s death.
Eddard accepts and begins an investigation into Jon's death. Eddard uncovers Jon's findings about Queen Cersei Lannister' infidelity and Robert's lack of a trueborn heir. Robert still mistakenly believes that Joffrey Baratheon is his son. It has ruled over the Vale of Arryn for millennia, originally as the Kings of Mountain and Vale and more recently as Lords of the Vale and Wardens of the East under the Targaryen kings and King Robert Baratheon.
